CASE 2
CASE 2 A:
McDonalds:
McDonalds made the training fun by using a game that would inspire the worker, but also give a realistic real-life situation. It went so well that the game was played by outsiders as well, which proves that the game was made in such a fun way, that outside people would play it just for fun.
By using new technology, the training process is developing, and getting more time and money efficient. This way, the companies doesn’t have to invest a lot of money in a training session which wouldn’t end up teaching the employees anything new, which again would be a waste of the company’s valuable time and money.
McDonald’s has proven here that developing company tactics at the same time with the rapid changes in the world, is a good thing.
CASE 2 B:
Nando's:
Nando’s invested in a lot of different training sessions, for different type of purposes, all the way from new employees, to managing directors. The investment they made for the training is seen clearly in the different National Training Awards they have won.
Nandos’s used the buddy system of training, where they would receive a training toolkit, that would contain cards relevant to the restaurant and training session. The fact that they used a buddy system also gives different kinds of point of views.
By using team exercises you make training fun and active experience (Gomez-Mejia, L.R., Balkin, D.B. and Cardy, R.L 2016, 265). By sending the managers to a beautiful place, Nando’s created an inspiring environment to develop and learn, as well as using team tasks to bring the different restaurants managers together.
‘’Our main objective when launching the coaching program was to establish a culture where people would take more responsibility for their own development, the development of others and the growth of the business. The fact that we have increased our turnover and kept our values only proves that the program has exceeded its objectives.’’ (Human Resource Management International Digest, Vol. 14 2006, 19-21.) They have worked hard to keep their core values, about a family environment and internal communication, by investing time and money in sending their employees to training, this has proven how important the training can be.
They have used different tactics, e.g. like role-playing different leadership styles, and by arranging two coaching sessions back in their restaurant they have been able to make the training fun as well as realistic. Also, by sending the managers to a beautiful place, they created an inspiring environment to develop and learn (Human Resource Management International Digest, Vol. 14 2006, 265).
The training isn’t always the solution, e.g. in a case where the employee isn’t the problem, but the task itself, but in Nando’s case the solution has clearly been training. The training wouldn't work unless it's related to the company’s goals. (Gomez-Mejia, L.R., Balkin, D.B. and Cardy, R.L, 2016 p. 268.)
Both McDonalds and Nando's are big enough companies, that they would have to see to that all supervisors would receive two hours of interactive preventing sexual harassment training every two years, according to e.g. the California law, as well as see to that the person that makes the hiring decisions is aware of different kind of laws, e.g. the age discrimination law. (Gomez-Mejia, L.R., Balkin, D.B. and Cardy, R.L. 2016, 268.)
The article was about how the helicopter industry has started to use simulators in pilot training, to make the training safe, but also very realistic.
